Inspired by First Descents and Stranded in a Storm

One of the most fulfilling experiences for us so far this spring has been learning about First Descents.  First Descents is an amazing non-profit organization  committed to curing young adults of the emotional effects of cancer and empowering them to regain control of their lives by experiencing outdoor adventure therapy through kayaking, rock climbing and other outdoor adventure sports. We recently traveled to Vail, Colorado for the organization’s annual gala fundraiser.  It’s so impressive to hear from young adults with cancer about the many ways that an outdoor experience can be such an important part of their treatment.

While in Vail, we enjoyed some beautiful, warm mountain weather.  We skied in 65-degree temperatures under bluebird skies.  That is, until it came time to leave.

On our way to the airport in Denver for our return flight to Oregon, a surprise spring blizzard struck.  The highways got closed down and we became stranded halfway between Vail and the Denver.  We booked a hotel room in the town of Silverthorne for the night.  Check out the weather outside our hotel window!

To pass the time in our hotel, we played some card games.  Of course we had to include our Hydro Flask!  We even invented our own game.  To play, all you need is your Hydro Flask and a deck of cards.  Spread the deck out around the bottle.  The goal of the game is to stack as many of the cards as you can on the bottle without making them fall.  The only catch is that as you stack them, two of the corners must be off the edge.

Hydro Flask helped relieve our boredom!   Despite the traveling hardships, it was an awesome trip.

Thanks First Descents for a memorable weekend. We believe in your mission, and we’re inspired.
