Why Water is Better Than Diet Soda

Soda is a tasty treat every once in a while, but we all know it’s not very good for you.  But why? Here is an article from Livestrong.com about why water rocks and soda flops.

From Livestrong.com –

According to the MadSci Network website, different people have different percentages of water in their body. The average male is made up of 60 percent water, and the average female is 55 percent because they have more fat in their bodies. Water hydrates all of the organs to help them function at their maximum performance. Nutrients and oxygen are carried through the bloodstream by water, and the brain is largely made up of water.

Water is comprised of hydrogen and oxygen and is the building block of all life. According to the Physical Geography website, water has a high specific heat, or heat capacity. This means that “it allows for the moderation of Earth’s climate and helps organisms regulate their body temperature more effectively.” Water also has a high surface tension, or is adhesive and elastic, which allows for the movement of blood through tiny vessels in the body.

Popular diet sodas contain carbonated water, phosphoric acid, citric acid, artificial sweetener and caffeine. Carbonated water is water charged with carbon dioxide. Phosphorous and citric acid help to promote and preserve the carbonation. To obtain zero calories in diet soda but keep the sweet flavor, artificial sweeteners are added. According to the Mayo Clinic website, artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame K and sucralose are chemical or natural compounds that offer sweetness and are used in place of sugar.
