Chemicals found in everyday products are getting closer public scrutiny as more studies raise concerns about potential health risks. Bisphenol A, or BPA, is one such chemical used since the 1950s to make hard plastics, such as baby bottles, and protective linings on the inside of cans.
Two states – Minnesota and Connecticut – the city of Chicago and a county in New York have banned the sale of baby bottles, sippy cups and baby food containers containing BPA, and Congress is considering a federal ban.
In Wisconsin, proposals have been introduced in the Assembly and Senate to ban the sale of baby bottles and cups for children ages 5 and younger that contain BPA. The bill also requires products to be labeled as not containing the chemical.
